Parhelia Cask #8 Domaine La Prenellerie Lot 89 Cognac Bons Bois 51.5% - (700ml)
Fréderic Billonneau of Domaine La Prenellerie is engaging in several cutting-edge processes in the Bons Bois cognac cru, including organic viticulture on the subregions clay soils, and growing Malbec for production of red Pineau de Charentes.
Importer's Notes:
Our Domaine La Prenellerie Lot 89 cognac, like many cognacs exceeding XO status in the region, does not have age statement documentation after it reached its tenth year. Under the regulations of the semi-governmental/semi-private cognac regulatory body, the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC), this spirit cannot carry a 36 year age statement on the label. However, we can confidently state the cask both looks and tastes very old. We also trust our supplier. Perhaps equally relevant, depending on the extent to which you respect wood, it does have “1989” written on the outside of the cask.
Tasting Notes
Like many of the highest-quality Bons Bois cognacs, this spirit is exceptionally floral. On the nose, it has notes of jasmine, wintergreen, birch sap, and vanilla with fall honey, fresh ground cocoa beans, and molasses grounding the brighter elements. The cocoa element becomes both more round and more prominent as it rests in the glass. On the palate, it has clove, the same honey elements, more than a touch of rancio, wood varnish, and a very prominent Mirabelle plum. Its tempo—the term we use for the intensity of experience from beginning to end—is brash but not overly aggressive from the initial sip through the finish which lingers with fresh baked white bread, stonefruit, and rancio.
