Portugal's finest grape for the production of port. It accounts for about 2% of plantings in the Douro Valley. Used mainly by the most quality conscious producers, the thick skinned, low yielding variety is used in making some of the most age worthy vintage Ports.
Alentejo is best known for its red wines, some of which are made from Aragonez (Tempranillo), Castelao, Trincadeira or a blend of the three. The region has also adopted popular varieties such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Alentejo has been recognized for creating a uniquely Alentejano wine style from quintessentially French grape varieties.

Red wine is wine made from dark-coloured grape varieties. The color of red differs based on the grapes variety or varieties used.Interestingly, black grapes yield a juice that is greenish-white. The actual red color comes from anthocyan pigments (also called anthocyanins) from the skin of the grape (exceptions are the relatively uncommon teinturier varieties, which produce a red colored juice). Most of the production centers around the extraction of color and flavor from the grape skin.
