This Lambrusco variety produces wines with a ruby red to purple color and is grown in 13 municipalities around Modena, including the city of Santa Croce, in the north. The locals consider Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce DOC as Modena’s table wine, but it may prove difficult to distinguish it from its rival neighbors’ Lambrusco types. It must compose 90% of the blend of Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce DOC wines. The other allowed grapes which may be blended with it are Fontana, Lambrusco di Sorbara and Lambrusco Grasparossa.
A rosé wine is also produced under the name Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce Rosato DOC.
