This is an early release of the Classic Malts 16 year old. When United Distillers succeeded DCL, one of their first orders of business was to reclaim control of the distribution of their single malts. In the DCL days, the distilleries had been licensed to the blending companies in their portfolio, Cragganmore for example to D&J McCallum, and Talisker to John Walker & Sons. The process of cancelling these contracts was quicker for some distilleries than others, so some of the early Classic Malts still bear the names of these former licensees, most notably here, with White Horse Distillers still displayed on the packaging. These versions are increasingly sought after.

Product Review
Layered with peat, smoke, and seaweed, the enticing aromas place you right in the distillery’s environment, whose warehouses are literally lapped by the Hebridean Sea. Striking a terrific balance between intensity and body, its savory component is complemented by a touch of sweet fruit from sherry casks. It is no wonder the 16 year old has won accolade after accolade and was a particular favorite of the late Whisky authority Micahel Jackson.
Although one of a number Scotland's whisky producing islands, Islay is so distinctive in character it is classified as a separate region. Of the island's seven distilleries currently bottling, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, and Laphroaig on the shouthern shore and Caol Ila to the north, are known for making the most peaty whisky that expresses medicinal qualities redolent of seaweed, salt, and iodine. By contrast, Bowmore, Bunnahabhain, and Bruichladdich make less peated but equally complex whisky, with the latter two bottling the island's lightest styles.
Single malts, made by a single distillery and from 100% malted barley, comprise the majority of our selection. However you will also find a number of popular blended Scotches as well as some very special one-off, single barrel, single malts from independent bottlers.
