Labertino Cenizas Sauvignon Blanc - 2023 (750ml)
The 2023 Cenizas de Laberinto Sauvignon Blanc opens with pure, floral, citrus-driven aromas, transitioning to a beamingly bright, tensile plate lined with mouthwatering acidity. The finish continues this live-wire energy, concluding with a tangy, refreshing energy laden with chiseled persistence. It was quite instructive to taste this next to the 2011 vintage, which had aged impressively well. This is \one of the more captivating and age-worthy expressions of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. My tasting with Rafael Tirado was a highlight of my November 2024 trip to Chile. He and Enrique Tirado of Don Melchor are identical twins, something I was unaware of before our appointment, and he humorously did little to correct my confusion for the first minute or so of our appointment. His 18 hectares of vineyards lie next to Maule's Lake Colbún, planted in the early 1990s on "trumao" soils—a well-drained, volcanic ash composition specifically from this small section of Chile—with numerous exposures and orientations, including curved and circular sites. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir stand out, but a consistent refinement, purity and elegance across the range make this entire lineup especially worth seeking out. I was also quite impressed by the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc that Rafael presented, which was a solid testament to the age-worthiness of this unique site and his winemaking prowess.
