Greywacke Chardonnay - 2022 (750ml)
Greywacke Chardonnay - 2022 (750ml)
The vineyards were hand-picked separately at high ripeness levels and whole-bunch pressed using very low maceration press cycles. Some of the fruit was pressed directly to barrel, the balance was lightly settled and then racked to barrel.
The juice went through a natural indigenous yeast fermentation in French oak barriques (20% new), with the final phase continuing for many months. The wine received occasional lees stirring and underwent a complete malolactic fermentation.
A medley of lively citrus fragrances, layered with notes of crème anglaise and praline, infused with a flinty minerality. The palate is richly textured and thoughts of lemon
curd on hot buttered brioche are hard to ignore – there’s also a flourish of tarragon with stone fruit flavours, tempered by toasty oak and zesty acidity. A concentrated wine – charming in its youth with many savoury layers that will gradually unfold with cellaring.
The 2022 Chardonnay is ripe and powerful, with intense fruit in the mouth, buttered popcorn characters and yellow peach. The acidity is as bright as the fruit is ripe, a characteristic of New Zealand Chardonnay that is both distinct and consistent. This is a little more obvious and fruit-driven than last year's iteration. Erin Larkin
Rich and toasty with a golden-green hue, there's no mistaking the oak in the 2022 Chardonnay, which has the overt style that we've come to expect from Greywacke Chardonnay. Ripe, white stone fruit meets floral and smoky bacon tones in this young, unapologetic expression. Yet plenty of concentration and a sense of firm tension give this wine persistence and drive. - By Rebecca Gibb MW on March 2025
