A lasting legacy envisioned by the late vintner Luigi Antonio Barberani is the organic 2020 Orvieto Classico Superiore Muffa Nobile Calcaia (in a 500-millimeter bottle). This delicately sweet wine shows an amber color with golden highlights. It hits that proverbial sweet spot that is not cloying but also far from dry. Noble rot, or Botrytis cinerea, adds complexity in the form of forest floor, dried fruit and paraffin wax. This vintage offers great intensity and brightness, making for a very special Umbrian wine. Barberani farms one of the only areas in central Italy that can be counted on for consistent botrytis. Monica Larner

Dusty, rich and sweetly inviting, the 2020 Orvieto Classico Superiore Muffa Nobile Calcaia slowly opens in the glass. This is a more delicate interpretation of Calcaia, showing hints of candied peach and lime complemented by sweet smoke and brown spice. It opens with a balanced inner sweetness contrasted by touches of citrus, a blend of mango and tropical melon, giving way to confectionary spice. I don't feel its 140 grams of residual sugar, as this is wildly fresh with vibrant acidity that cleanses the palate. It finishes long and with a subtle tug of tension. - By Eric Guido, July 2023
