Arnaldo Caprai Collepiano Sagrantino Di Montefalco - 2019 (750ml)
Arnaldo Caprai Sagrantino Collepiano is a bold expression of Montefalco’s rich winemaking heritage and the distinctive Sagrantino grape, which is found only in this region. Collepiano, meaning "gentle slopes," refers to the rolling hills where the vineyards flourish, benefiting from ideal sun exposure and unique terroir. This wine embodies the renaissance of Montefalco as a premier wine region, showcasing Sagrantino’s deep, robust character with flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a touch of earthy minerality. Collepiano is a testament to Caprai’s commitment to crafting wines that highlight the singular qualities of this exceptional grape and its home.
A plush texture wraps grippy tannins, carrying flavors of baked black cherry, black currant and mocha, with fragrant hints of Earl Grey tea leaf and sandalwood. The finish is firm, with spice and tar accents. Best from 2025 through 2035. 4,150 cases made, 450 cases imported.
The 2019 Collepiano is incredibly pretty, with a whiff of wild strawberries complemented by chalk dust and sweet tobacco. This is pure class, silky and round, with brisk acidity motivating an elegant wave of ripe red and black fruits. Its spice box of a finish is long, leaving a web of fine-grained tannins tugging at the palate yet failing to slow the 2019’s momentum. The Collepiano will require a bit of cellaring to show its best. - By Eric Guido on July 2023
