Catalonia (Catalunya in Catalan and Cataluña in Spanish) is an autonomous community in the north-east of Spain. It stretches from the historic county (comarca) of Montsia in the south to the border with France in the north. The Mediterranean Sea forms its eastern border and offers 360 miles (580km) of coastline.

The Catalunya DO appellation was Spain's first region-wide, cover-all DO title. Created in 1999, it covers all of the scattered vineyards that were not covered by any of the region's other 11 DOs.
