Wines: Croatia
Croatia's viticulture precedes the birth of Christ and probably started when the ancient Greeks brought vines over with them to the Adriatic coast. The countries producing regions are split into two by the range of hills that trace the coast. The inland region is responsible for about two thirds of the countries overall output. White wine accounts for nine in every ten bottles produced in the region, most of which is made from Laški Rizling, or Welschriesling, which is not related to Riesling. The coastal region produces a host of different wines from over 400 different varietals. Most are natives such as Teran and Plavac Mali, however there is an increasing number of international varieties being planted, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah.
