Until the beginning of the 21st century only table grapes and raisins were grown in the region. But that is changing and Catamarca has recently become associated with wines of export quality, and quality and commercial focus are rapidly increasing.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Syrah are the first varieties to have produced commercially promising wines from the region.
