91 View from the Cellar
Bodegas Luna Beberide’s Godello vines are old, planted on a combination of schist and slate. Their 2020 version is a lovely wine on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet wafting from the glass in a youthful mix of tart pear, lemon, wild fennel, stony soil tones and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and zesty, with a superb core, lovely mineral undertow and cut and a long, nascently complex and classy finish. I really like the gentle botanical layers here from the wild fennel-like elements, as they work beautifully at the table. 2021-2030. John Gilman - Issue #91 / February 2021

A vibrant, aromatic white grape indigenous to the north west of Spain and Portugal. Despite nearly being killed off by phylloxera in the early 20th century its plantings are now rapidly increasing thanks to a movement promoting the traditional varieties of Galicia. The subregion of Valdeorras has the largest area under vines and produces some of most expressive examples. In addition to making the Portugese table wines of Alentejo and Dao, where it goes by the name Gouveio, it is also blended with Malvasia Fina and Viosinho to make white Port.
Galicia is one of the 17 top-level administrative regions (known as comunidades autónomas) of Spain. It occupies the north-western corner of the Iberian Peninsula, and is exposed on two sides to the Atlantic Ocean. To the south lies Portugal, to the east Castilla y Leon. Winemaking has long been a tradition in Galicia, brought to the region by the ancient Romans and continued by the monks throughout the Middle Ages. Today, Galicia is best known for its Rias Baixas wines – crisp, aromatic whites made predominantly from Albarino. Galician wines bear striking similarities to those of Minho (particularly Vinho Verde), just across the border in Portugal. Galicia is home to five DO-rated wine zones. Running west to east they are: Ribeiro, Ribeira Sacra, Monterrei, Valdeorras and the most celebrated, Rias Baixas. Each has its own specialties and traditions.

White wine is a wine whose color can be pale-yellow, yellow-green, and yellow-gold colored. The wine is produced from a variety of grape varieties. The flavor and color comes from the juice of the grape and sometimes the skin of the grape as well. Interestingly, not all white wine comes from white grapes. Some select red grapes are used as in Champagne.
