Steinhügel is German for rock pile or cairn.  The grapes all come from the La Estancia Vineyard.   The vineyard is loaded with decomposed granite from the mountains behind Big Sur.  There are two German clones, each with its own picking date and two cuvées.  Each pick is separated into two versions: a direct whole cluster pressing and an overnight macerated pressing.  Steinhügel is an example of what I love so much about Riesling.  It is loaded with generous fruit, layered with long textures, and energized with vibrant acidity.

The 2018 Riesling Steinhügel is exotic and expansive in feel. Green apple, mint, white glowers and tropical fruit open up effortlessly in the glass, their energy lifted by a core of bright acids that give the wine freshness and cut. There is so much to like in the 2018. It's an absolutely delicious wine from Graham Tatomer. - Antonio Galloni

There's a steely line of minerality that slices through the nose of this bottling, which simultaneously shows warmer qualities of kiwi, apple flesh and dried grass. The palate is very grippy in texture, as subtle undercurrents of pear skin, lime peel and orange sorbet lead into a delicately nutty finish.  Matt Kettmann
