Ataraxia Chardonnay - 2023 (750ml)
In the most accurate and faithful way possible, our unapologetically wooded white wine mirrors the terroir in which our Chardonnay vines are grown. In other words, it is an expression of the low vigour, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld Shale derived soils and the heavily maritime-influenced climate.
Made using uncomplicated (not simple) winemaking techniques, this is an athletic, chiseled and precise wine. It embraces the very adult tastes of salinity, brininess and minerality, all of which are the hallmarks of the great and classic white wines of the world.
Feeling guilt that I had not found time to visit Kevin Grant at Ataraxia, I bought a bottle of the 2023 Chardonnay at Hedonism in London so that at least there would be representation in my South Africa report. This is one of the Cape's best Chardonnays and this current release demonstrates Grant's talents. With greenish tints in the glass, the nose is clearly on a different level to several other Chardonnays that I opened at home. More mineral tension, but cut and race, light scents of Alpine stream and citrus lemon. The palate is taut and fresh with a fine bead of acidity. There is real brightness to this Chardonnay with ample depth and grip on the, yes, Burgundian finish. Thinking Saint-Aubin without the price tag. Promise to visit next trip! - By Neal Martin on August 2025
