It presents a superb aromatic array of toasty new oak, mineral, truffle, violets, licorice, and blackberry. On the palate it is full-bodied, weighty, and powerful leading to a rich, full-flavored finish. It should easily have a 30 year lifespan.

Bodegas Neo consists of a bunch of young guys having the time of their lives. They seem to be making wine everywhere (Rueda, Priorat, Bierzo, Rioja, and Ribera del Duero), as well as designing wine labels, recording music videos, and generally partying. But when it comes down to their top two wines, they are deadly serious. On my visit in May, 2010, I was shown verticals of Neo and Neo Punta Esencia. Neo is sourced from 50- to 60-year-old Tempranillo vines and typically aged in French and American oak for 15 months before bottling without fining or filtration. Neo Punta Esencia is made only in the better years. It is sourced from a single, 80-year-old vineyard producing tiny yields. It receives the “200% new oak” treatment spending 12 months in 100% new French oak before racking into a different set of new barrels for 6 months.
Wine Advocate - 96 points
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0613/4104/0803/products/127858_bacce5fd-ca96-478b-b1b7-01d5af06203d.jpg?v=1680524760
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0613/4104/0803/products/red_wine_cffc4fc4-4ce0-4d94-af1e-8de57bebba63.jpg?v=1682310209
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0613/4104/0803/products/127874_b25b475f-6db6-4ba5-acc8-20727549bdbe.jpg?v=1680524768
pujanza-cisma-2004-1-5l
Pujanza Cisma - 2004 (1.5L)
The ambitious and very expensive 2004 Pujanza Cisma is something of a gamble. The wine is 100% Tempranillo from an 80-year-old parcel with tiny yields. Malolactic fermentation took place in new French oak followed by 18 months of aging in barrel. Almost black in color, the wine’s aromatics remain reticent and brooding. Upon entry, the wine is massive with a wall of black fruits and full, firm tannins. The flavors are reticent but promising, the finish dense and unyielding. The wine is a high risk, high reward effort. It represents the essence of what vintage port can achieve. The color is an opaque black/purple, and the nose offers up fabulously intense aromas of minerals, cassis, blackberries, licorice, and spices, as well as extraordinary purity and penetration. Yet this is still an unformed and infantile wine. If Chateau Latour made a late-harvest Cabernet Sauvignon, I suspect it might smell like this. In the mouth, the wine is out of this world, displaying layer upon layer of concentrated black fruits backed by well-integrated tannin and structure. This is a massive, magnificently rich, full-bodied port that will be far more flattering in its youth than were such Taylors as the 1983, 1977, or 1970. It possesses awesome fruit, marvelous intensity, and lavish opulence, all brilliantly well-delineated by the wine's formidable structure. Big, rich berry fruit intermixed with dusty loamy earthiness, roasted herbs, and spice box are all present in this medium to full-bodied, tasty Pinot.

With over a dozen Pinot Noirs, one would think that winemaker Bob Cabral would be perennially stressed out having to deal with so many different vineyards. However, except for the blend of Russian River and Westside Road Neighbors, they are all legitimate vineyards, and I can fully comprehend why they would want to keep them separate. As I have said before, there is a clear “house” style, with wines tending to have a slightly higher acid profile, lower pHs. But there is no doubting that these are well-made wines which are, for the most part, age-worthy Pinot Noirs which, with some patience, reward cellaring. In 2006, a challenging vintage in the Russian River area (less so on the Sonoma Coast), the 2006 vintage has turned out well at Williams-Selyem. Of course, 2007 is a more fragrant, purer vintage from an integrity perspective, so those wines will be a no-brainer. I will comment on all the single vineyards, but as I write them, I must offer a word of advice: don’t dare ignore the brilliant Zinfandels and Chardonnays that Cabral turns out. They are not as renowned as the single-vineyard Pinots, but they are top-flight wines. A Pinot Noir that really depends on vintage for success is from the San Benito Valley south of San Francisco, home to the old Almaden winery.
Robert Parker - 90 points
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0613/4104/0803/products/127931_5da713b7-92d1-4476-84e1-3219e42a5834.jpg?v=1680524822
cheval-blanc-1982-750ml
Cheval Blanc - 1982 (750ml)

During its first 10-12 years of life, this was a perfect wine, but it now seems to be in a stage where the fruit is still present, but the previous exuberance and intensity have faded slightly. Even from barrel the seamless 1989 La Mission revealed a special elixir aspect, tasting like it had been designed by Chanel. It still possesses a blue/purple color with only a hint of garnet creeping in, and the explosive aromatics offer up notes of licorice, creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, smoky barbecue meats, truffles and graphite. If that’s not enough to get one salivating, the palate has never disappointed either. Reminiscent of the 1982 Pichon Lalande (which never shut down and continues to go from strength to strength), the dense plum/purple-colored 2003 offers gorgeous aromas of blackberries, plum liqueur, sweet cherries, smoke, and melted licorice. Fleshy, full-bodied, and intense, displaying a seamless integration of wood, acidity, tannin, and alcohol, this beauty can be drunk now or cellared for 20 years or more.
Robert Parker - 95 points
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0613/4104/0803/products/red_wine_68976ca7-1d7e-409a-8a70-585423d5bf80.jpg?v=1682310250
bond-vecina-napa-valley-red-wine-2005-750ml
Bond Vecina Napa Valley Red Wine - 2005 (750ml)
The 2005 Vecina is also strutting its stuff. I can’t say it showed better than it did last year, but this wine comes close to perfection for my palate. Made in a Graves-like style, it exhibits scents of roasted herbs, espresso, scorched rocks, and liquid minerals seamlessly integrated into a full-bodied, dense wine offering a cascade of black cherries and black currants. Built for the long haul, this powerful 2005 is soft enough to be drunk early, but it will not hit its stride for at least a decade, and should age for three decades thereafter.
Robert Parker - 96 points
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0613/4104/0803/products/128422_c1bf3d40-f415-4361-8763-cf4be99cd4a1.jpg?v=1680524934
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0613/4104/0803/files/red_wine_2f79918f-35d2-44b5-9d03-5f06787efc31.jpg?v=1692066200
taylor-fladgate-vintage-port-2007-750ml
Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port - 2007 (750ml)
The Taylor’s 2007 is in a rather odd phase at the moment, its sweet, marzipan-tinged bouquet tending to dominate the ripe black fruit. The palate is much more controlled, with very fine tannins, supremely well-judged acidity and a very elegant, composed finish that has more purity and poise than the Fonseca. I would give bottles another decade to allow the aromatics to calm down. The 2006 Chateau d’Yquem has a slightly reticent bouquet at first that unfolds in the glass. There aromas are well-behaved at first, but then start having some fun with lovely scents of dried honey, dried quince, marzipan and beeswax. Delving further into the aromatics there is a hint of spice and white pepper. The palate is extremely well-balanced with a viscous opening. There is great harmony and composure here – certainly not as voluminous or ravishing as the 2009 – but a controlled and very focused Yquem with a slight saltiness coming through toward the finish. The edginess is absorbing and it should play out nicely with bottle age. This could be the dark horse between the 2001 and 2009. Drink now-2050.
