Varietal: Frappato
Frappato is a light-bodied red grape widely grown on the southeastern coast of Sicily. The grape is of great historical importance, both for its wines and its legislative influence. In 2005, the Cerasuolo di Vittoria region became Sicily’s first and only DOCG. Cerasuolo di Vittoria wines are a blend of Frappato and the region’s main grape, Nero d’Avola. Cherry-colored, aromatic and low in tannins, varietal Frappato wines are light bodied and slightly reminiscent of good Beaujolais. However, Frappato is found in more blended wines than varietal examples, and this is where the variety really shines.

Red wine is wine made from dark-coloured grape varieties. The color of red differs based on the grapes variety or varieties used. Interestingly, black grapes yield a juice that is greenish-white. The actual red color comes from anthocyan pigments (also called anthocyanins) from the skin of the grape (exceptions are the relatively uncommon teinturier varieties, which produce a red colored juice). Most of the production centers around the extraction of color and flavor from the grape skin.
