During WWII, 142 Cadet/Midshipmen from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY lost their lives at sea. This Battle Standard 142 Gin (Barrel Finished) gin is named in honor of those men. The spirit is KO Distilling's 90 proof gin which has been "finished" or "rested" in used Heaven Hill bourbon barrels for 5 months. It has a golden hue coming from the residual bourbon, remaining char and oak elements from the barrels. The subtle bourbon flavoring provides a smoothing feature to the gin, which already has an interesting, complex taste of juniper upfront, followed by citrus, finishing with cinnamon and cardamom. The Barrel Finished gin can be enjoyed on-the-rocks, with a splash of tonic water, or in specialty cocktails.

Gin has come a long way since its infamous origins as the scourge of the working classes in 18th century in England. Once called "mother's ruin," gin and its closest relative, Jenever, enjoyed mass popularity during the early 20th century, in cocktails and punches across the globe, but declined with cocktail culture in the 60's and 70's. The international resurgence of martinis and speakeasies has led to a boom in microdistilleries producing high-quality gins for all tastes, from dry to sweet, and with all the aromatic variety of a spice market.
