Varietal: Riesling
Undervalued and frequently mispronounced it offers a wealth of highly aromatic and diverse styles of white wine. Riesling can vary from bone dry, all the way through to lusciously sweet Beerenauslese (BA) and Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA). Its ability to age and transmit the terroir of the vineyard without losing its individual character places it amongst the most noble and academic of grape varieties. Germany is seen as Riesling's Old World home with the greatest concentration in the Mosel Valley, however, plantings have steadily increased across the border in the region of Alsace, France. Most Alsation Rieslings tend to be on the drier side. Even though some Grand Crus contain more sugar, they are still very refreshing and appetizing, due to a high level of acidity.

Viticulturally unique, Germany's wine has improved in leaps and bounds thanks to the dedication of its leading producers and a succession of fortuitously warm growing seasons. Although Germany's focus is still in producing white wine, plantings of dark skinned varieties such as Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir) are increasing rapidly. Riesling, Germany's classic varietal, has maintained a steady fifth of the total area under vines. In second place, Muller-Thurgau (a crossing between Riesling and Silvaner, Germany's third most popular white grape) has seen a dramatic decline. Spatburgunder is taking its place in many parts of southern Germany including Baden and Pfalz. More than doubling in the last 20 years, it is now the country’s third most popular variety overall, taking up roughly half the acreage of Riesling. Despite this change, US's imports still mainly reflects their white wine production, with Riesling remaining the most popular. The Saar is one of the premium Riesling producing wine regions in Germany. It is part of the Mosel region. About 13,400 ha are planted under vines, most of the vineyards are tplanted on steep slopes, offering breathtaking views.
